Faux Fur - Yes or No?

So, here's the thing. I found this jacket:

Totally me, right? I would rock that coat. Huge, red, fluffy, I would feel like a rockstar in it and it would be lots of fun to wear.

But it's fur. Faux fur.. but fur.

Why would I quibble over that? I'm not sure.  Here's what's in my head about it:

I eat meat, and I have no problem at all with that. I like to eat meat that's sourced from ethical places, where I know the animals were happy in their lives and slaughtered with respect. I don't think raising animals for food is intrinsically wrong.

I've had no problem wearing real fur in the past when I have known the source - a friend with a rabbit farm, for instance. I know those rabbits had a happy hoppy life before they were respectfully culled for their meat, and to throw away the skins over a quibble seemed wasteful and stupid.

I also saw wearing vintage furs as a lesser evil.. if the animal had been dead longer than I'd been alive, there seemed to me to be more disrespect in tossing it's skin into landfill than wearing it.

I know others feel differently though, and some I have heard people argue that we shouldn't wear faux fur, because it encourages the fur industry, which is cruel.

What do you think? Do you wear fur, real or faux? Do you think others should wear fur, real or fake? Do you think if it's vintage or ethically sourced that makes a difference? Tell me what you think....

New: MAC Sheen Supreme Lipglass.

As a self-confessed MAC addict and lipgloss lover, i was thrilled when MAC released the new range of Sheen Supreme Lipglass to complement the Sheen Supreme Lipstick range.

The product comes in 11 shades, my favourite of which is Cherry Fest, a pink with a high level pearl sheen to it. I love the shine of MAC's Lipglass and though i haven't yet tried the products, i'm very excited to get to the MAC counter and pick up one or two of these little beatties for myself.

The packaging is a click-pen type setup, which is great for eliminating that "oops i squeezed too hard" moment where you end up with a trout pout full of gloss, but on the downside, you also can't physically squeeze out every last drop of product.

Overall, though...I'm very exbited about this new range (and the fresh new colours that they have released in the Sheen Supreme Lipstick range), and i'm sure to post a review very soon.

OOTD: Victor Alexandre, City Chic

So, the weather is all over the place at the moment, so there's lots of layering going on. I try not to take a heavy coat unless it's really cold in the morning, otherwise I end up lugging it around all day.

This is a pretty standard work outfit for the most part - black pinstripe shirt, black pants, sensible flats..

The shirt is from an opshop, and it had the brand label cut out but the care instructions are in dutch. I like to think it travelled halfway around the world to find it's way to me. Pants are standard black business pants from city chic.

But the vest? The vest is something else.

The vest is magic, and it's from Victor Alexandre, a local melbourne designer. It's long at the front and short at the back, and it's snuggly and comfortable - it's like going to work in a comfy hoodie but it looks much dressier than that. I love the heck out of this thing. It's a piece that was a bit of an investment, even on clearance, but at a cost per wear basis, really very cheap - I am going to be wearing and loving this thing for years to come.

Victor Alexandre do these amazing sculpural pieces that are a wonder of drapery - their stuff is always interesting and funky, and also really comfortable to wear, which is an awesome combination. I wish I could afford more of their pieces, but in the meantime I will enjoy the few that I have, very much.

Review: Mineral Therapy Illuminating Pearls

When I first got my hands on this, I was struck by the novelty of the design. It's a cute jar full of multicoloured pearls, with a brush that screws onto the top, and a clear lid that goes on the top.

There's a lot more to this product than novelty value though. It's a really lovely illuminator for night time wear.

The pearls are full of tiny speck of glitter, and they give the skin a glow and a sheen wherever you put it. This makes it a bit too shiny for daytime for me, but for night-time it's great.

Like all illuminators with shine, you need to be careful where you put this - if you have fine lines around your eyes it will highlight these, so put it a bit further down on the crest of your cheeks - right above where your blusher would sit.

If you're wearing something low cut, go ahead and sweep some across your collarbones as well.

All the FOA products are super cheap for the quality they are - this is a great way to experiment with illuminator without spending a lot of money. Check it out if you get the chance.

Review: Sally Hansen Salon Effects real nail polish strips.

I have to admit, I looked at the packaging after I bought these and thought "This is going to be impossible to do neatly. I'll never get it to look like the picture." I was very pleasantly surprised.

They are actually not only very easy to use, but very forgiving. It's not a situation where you get one shot to stick it in the right spot otherwise they are ruined. Not at all. They are slightly tacky on the "sticky" side, but can be removed and re-placed a couple of times if you happen to misjudge your mark.

Basically, you just follow the instructions, peel the protective films (there are 2 on each strip) away from the nail polish, place the strip on your nail, smooth it down and file off the excess. It's that simple!

I picked up the skull and crossbones design for myself, and the strips look exactly the same as the picture, as you can see below. I've seen pictures of strips that other people have used, and the patterns/designs are really true to the packaging's image.

Obviously, they aren't as cheap as slicking on a couple of coats of nail polish, but i think for the price (which is much less than having a design airbrushed onto your nails, even at the cheapest of salons) they are well worth it.

In terms of wear, so far so good. I've had them on for 2 days now and the only damage they've sustained is my fault because I've scraped them against brick walls carrying things into the house, or I've been indulging my lovely nail biting habit. I really think if I can overcome the nail biting and grow my nails a little longer, these strips would be something I'd use a lot more often.

I've included the pictures of my own application because i wanted to show you all just how good they can look, even on a clumsy first application. Some of them aren't perfectly straight, but I certainly got the hang of them as I went along and next time will be very confident in applying them to a very pleasing, professional result.

Why we need models.

There's a lot of criticism out there about models - especially in the plus-sized world.

Thing is.. we need models - and here's why.

A model is the difference between looking at this:
and looking at this:

This is an amazing sequin shift dress from Damn You Alexis. It doesn't look like much on the rack, though. It's not till you see it on an actual person that you can really see how it looks.

If all I'd seen of this was the first picture, I'm not sure I would have looked at it twice, but when you see it all styled up and on a real person, well, THAT's something you'd want to get your hands on.

Even though I'm not blonde and I am not the same height or dimensions as this woman, I am still getting a much better idea of it's potential.

Of course, looking at the dress on someone else wouldn't be nearly as good as seeing it on me, which is why I always try things on whenever possible. You should too!

"But what if I am buying online?!", I can hear you asking. Don't worry, I've got an answer for that, too, or at least something to help a lot. stay posted.

Review: Glossybox March 2012

Finally, I got my Glossybox!

They've changed the cards, there's now a list of all the products in all of the boxes, of which you get five. Of course human nature being what it is, it just makes you scan the eighteen products and sigh over the interesting things you didn't get. Five out of eighteen doesn't seem like a lot. They've also taken the retail price off the cards, which is a pain.

Realistically though, it is a lot - this is a great box with some awesome stuff in it.

So what's there?
  • Proactiv Cleaning Bar - a full size sample.
  • Avene Gentle Toner
  • KMS Free Shape Hot Flex Spray - according to the instructions you spray it on while your hair is wet and then use a straightener or blow dryer - heat activates the product, apparently.
  • Absolutely Gorgeous Essentials - Macadamia Face Cream
  • Panda Pen - these things are really cool looking! It's a makeup corrector/cleaner you use under your eyes if your makeup wanders. Looking forward to trying this out.

There's something else in this box. I don't even want to say the name of it because I don't want to give the dodgy people that make these things any more hits on google. The ACCC has outed these things as a scam and anyone who was foolish enough to buy one of these things was due a refund.  I was surprised and disappointed to see it in the box - and if I was one of the other brands, I'd be pretty angry about being put in a group with such a nasty product.

That unpleasantness aside, this is another excellent showing with some great products that I'm looking forward to trying out.

How to fix your nails on the bus, fast!

We've all been there, it's Monday morning and you're on your way to work, thinking rather sullenly of all the places you'd rather be than headed to work (Paris, Rome, back under your doona...)

You look down at your nails.. and.. uuugh... chipped, nasty nail polish. Very unprofessional looking and not something you ought to take into the office at all.... but how to fix them, fast?

I found something to do the trick - these little beauties. Cost about $5 from the chemist at Flinders St Station... they're called Nail Polish Remover Pads and they are made by Swisspers Nails.

Nothing terribly complicated about the concept, they are just round (cotton?) pads soaked in an acetone free nailpolish remover. They come in a plastic jar with an airtight lid..

I had a gold glitter polish with red crackle over the top - not an easy combo to shift, even chipped - glitter polishes are notoriously hard to get off your nails, so I was expecting to have to go through a few of these pads to get it all off.

To my surprise, with a bit of scrubbing, I only needed one of these little pads to get all the polish off. The other pleasant surprise was that there was no noticeable "nail polish remover" smell so I didn't disturb any of my fellow passengers while I took care of this.

The mess, fuss, and stink of trying to manoeuvre a bottle of nail polish remover would be really hard on a bus, but these make things easy to fix up your nails wherever you are.

They're going to be lurking in my office drawer from now on, just in case..

Wild Makeup Looks: Aqua goth makeup

A few days ago I showed you a wild outfit I wore to the club.. the makeup was wild too, and I thought you might like a closer glimpse at it..

I used mostly Victorian Disco eyeshadows and glitter.. I went totally wild with an aqua-to-purple gradient from right under my brows - you can see how far I extended the colour - far wider than you'd normally wear eyeshadow - it really only works if you're going to go all out like this. I did strong eyeliner and drew hearts at the terminal of the eyeliner line as well..

On my lips, black illamasqua lipstick and gold shadow to form a black/gold gradient on my lips.

I wanted to look edgy and dark. A bit punk-rock, a bit goth and a bit dangerous.  I think I achieved what I was going for.

OOTD: Party dress, dressed down for everyday wear.

For a lunch with friends last week, i decided i'd like to wear the beautiful City Chic dress that i picked up at the Chub Republic fashion swap. The only problem was, the dress is perhaps a little bit fancy just for a lunch in the CBD.

To soften the look and make it a little more casual, i added a brown wool wrapover cardigan, stockings from Target (in the patterned section, which come in an "extra large" size!!!yay!!!!) and pumps from Rivers. I braided my hair asymmetrically on my head and added a fabric flower for good measure.

My handbag is a simple JAG design that i picked up at DFO Moorabbin at outlet price. I absolutely adore it, and it gets plenty of use.

Makeup was simple, pearlescent pinks on my lids, plenty of black liquid liner and mascara, and my trademark MAC dazzleglass in Salmon on my lips.

You really can wear your favourite party dress out to more casual occasions, if you just apply a little know-how to the accessories and keep it very simple. Hooray for many more occasions to wear beautiful clothes to!

OOTD: Plus Size Colourblocking in Red & Purple

My philosophy on trends is to take them or leave them as you desire. Inspiration comes from all sorts of places, not just what people trying to sell clothes are telling you to wear.

One trend I have picked up is Colorblocking. Before it was trendy I called it "Dressing colourfully" or even just "wearing more than one of my favourite colours at once!"  - catchy, no?

I am rocking one of my all time favourite colour combinations here - red and purple. Purple is notoriously hard to photograph accurately, and it's clear my trusty iphone camera is not up to the task, but the detail picture has almost got it - this is a rich, regal purple, dark and lush.. not lavender, not plum, a pure purple.
Combined with scarlet it's a head-turning combination.

I have a red singlet on that I bought for under $5 at a valleygirl/tempt outlet years ago..with that a red chiffon overlay skirt on sale at crossroads - it has the most lovely silky texture and is a joy to wear.
Over the top a v-neck dress from Dusk, also years old.

The shoes are trusty red suede pumps from Target, looking a little more battered each day..
Of course I wore purple eyeshadow and red lipstick as well :)

You've seen my favourite bright colour combination - what's yours?
